Students in grades 7-9 will build on the physical literacy skill development of the previous grades by refining fundamental movement skills through a skills-and-movement-concepts approach. Students in grades 7–9 will develop new skills and skill combinations through the introduction of new activities. Developing an ability to perform skill combinations and movement concepts while applying offensive and defensive strategies is a focus during these grades. Learning experiences will be non-traditional so that they are non-elimination, provide more opportunity for practice. Health-related physical fitness at the grades 7–9 level includes cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition. Personal fitness becomes a greater focus for students at this level. Regular participation in physical activity at moderate to vigorous intensities through quality physical education is important for optimal growth and development of children and adolescents. It is important that students not only have opportunity to develop/maintain healthy fitness levels through physical education, but that they understand why this is important and how they apply this knowledge to their lives outside of school.
The physical education curriculum focuses on: Movement - fundamental skills, combinations, cooperative activities, games, rhythmic movement, educational gymnastics, alternative activities Cognition- knowledge, beliefs, values, morals, decision-making, self-regulation and awareness, healthy living, motivation Affect - social well-being, emotional well-being, environmental health Awareness - personal health and the value of being active for life Assessments Students will engage in both assessments of learning and for learning. Assessment for learning helps teachers and students know where they are and where they need to go in order to meet the expectations. Assessment of learning happens at the end of particular section of study and demonstrates how thoroughly a concept is understood. As such, students are provided will multiple opportunities to show their learning through activities. Students’ achievement of the outcomes will be assessed using a 1-4 point rubric. This information will be used to calculate a percentage grade for each strand at the end of each term.
Students and their parents are strongly encouraged to keep track of their progress by using the Parent Portal of PowerSchool which is accessible on the Parent tab of the OPA website and by adding themselves to the Google Classrooms created by each teacher.
